SAP for Utilities

The current state of the industry has led to a difficult crossroad for utilities companies. SAP customers in utilities are looking to make more business processes digital but are faced with the challenge of whether they will have the time, budget, teams, or infrastructure needed for an implementation. Now more than ever, collaboration between the utility’s community is imperative.

Entering its 12th year, SAP for Utilities has evolved into North America’s largest SAP industry conference. The conference unites nearly a thousand professionals each year to network, learn, and discover SAP solutions and strategies specific to the utilities industry.

Produced by Eventful Conferences—an ASUG company—and in collaboration with SAP, SAP for Utilities is designed for all industry segments including electric, gas, and water. It is a critical junction for this community to gain expert guidance and training on today’s leading strategies and technologies.

Electric Vehicle Charging into the Future

California pushed boundaries to protect the environment when it set ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction goals for the year 2030. San Diego Gas & Electric embraced this challenge with the implementation of a large-scale utility-sponsored electric vehicle (EV) charging program, Power Your Drive, in Southern California. The investment in infrastructure empowered customers to embrace cleaner energy and encouraged greater adoption of EVs across the region. SDG&E had to create a solution that could accept and reconcile third-party data with its own in order to bill drivers participating in the program. Learn how SDG&E built functionality for the custom program in SAP S/4HANA to manage a large amount of customer data, determine and distribute daily pricing, integrate with the third-party service providers, and enable near-standard billing processes. The capabilities unleased by SAP S/4HANA are allowing SDG&E to bill customers directly, making it easy for customer EV charging while continuing to invest in clean transportation programs, support the statewide goal to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, promote a clean economy, lower pollution, and make California a cleaner place. Key Business Benefits:

  • Provide an easy-to-use program to charge EVs during grid-friendly hours.
  • Leverage SAP S/4HANA to simplify a complex/technical process for staff/customers.
  • Provide insights to charging patterns to provide better customer service.

Asset Lifecycle Analytics and Enhanced Data Integration Platform for MUG

The need to use asset lifecycle analytics and an enhanced data integration platform to shape and formulate asset management strategy has become more widespread since data capacity is no longer a constraint. This presentation showcases the use of SAP technologies such as SAP HANA®, big data integration with automated meter information, and data integration using SAP Data Services to provide “asset health scoring” algorithms. The application of the technical capabilities has provided next-generation building blocks within CenterPoint Energy’s analytics foundation. We discuss how this helped us to pull data from several sources for correlation and with insight into the information from HANA. The asset health score is used to determine the condition of major underground (MUG) transformers and indicates whether it requires any intervention (maintenance or replacement). The “asset health scoring” algorithm was developed for CenterPoint Energy 35 kV and 12 kV MUG Distribution Transformers but is sufficiently generic to be applied in any MUG distribution system. Key Business Benefits:

  • Big data integration
  • Asset intervention plan
  • Data validation process
