SAP Cloud for Utilities - Delivery and Transformation

With SAP Cloud for Utilities, SAP is working on a true end-to-end SaaS solution focused on utilities processes. The solution is building on existing cloud solutions such as SAP Service Cloud, SAP S/4HANA Cloud, SAP Cloud for Energy, and more.

We are busy adding both a utilities-specific data model as well as end-to-end utilities processes. The first version is focusing on the retail business, emphasizing self-service channels, covering processes from attracting and moving in new customers through e-commerce, managing the customer life cycle, defining new products and bundles, and optimizing meter-to-cash. The next version is planned to cover the distribution grid processes.

This half-day workshop is designed to address the business and technical challenges we see the utilities industries is facing today with a focus on the retail business. We will cover how SAP Cloud for Utilities will address those as well as how transition to the cloud can be accomplished step by step or all at once.

If you are an expert looking to move your innovative offerings and energy retail business processes to the cloud, this is your chance to hear from SAP experts while sharing your experiences with peers. The workshop will provide a detailed overview of the SAP Cloud for Utilities strategy and portfolio. It covers today’s and upcoming solution offerings as well as the road maps. Transforming Self-Service Apps Along with SAP CR&B Implementation for Maximizing Customer Experience

Many utilities have already invested in building their next-generation self-service applications, while their customer information system (CIS) platforms were still on legacy technologies. Modernizing the CIS platform in such cases brings in significant disruption to the self-service application, requiring remediation, integration, and other changes. However, these changes to self-service apps are also essential to leverage the capabilities of the modern CIS platform, therefore maximizing customer service experience. In this session, Southern California Edion (SCE), the largest electric utility in Southern California, joins Infosys to share its approach, experience, and best practices of integrating an existing modern self-service portal with a new SAP CR&B (on SAP S/4HANA) application being implemented as part of the customer service transformation initiative. The approach focuses on maximizing the remediation impact within the integration layers. SAP OData and SAP Multichannel Foundation-driven services were used as key enablers for this integration. Backed by extensive testing across web and mobile platforms, this initiative is expected to minimize end-customer impact in the digital portal.

A New Era of SAP S/4HANA in CIS, FIN, EAM, SC at Cleco

Cleco Holdings is an electric power company headquartered in Pineville, Louisiana. In business since 1935, the company has approximately 1,200 employees serving approximately 290,000 customers through its retail business and supplies wholesale power in Louisiana and Mississippi. Cleco also operates an unregulated wholesale electricity business, Cleco Midstream, with approximately 775 megawatts of generating capacity. Cleco owns nine generating units with a total nameplate capacity of 3,310 megawatts, 12,000 miles of distribution lines and 1,300 miles of transmission lines. Cleco uses multiple generating sources and multiple fuels to serve its customers. Cleco initiated the S.T.A.R.T. project in July 2017; a 22 month transformation program based on SAP S4 HANA technology that focused on transforming their existing application suite to SAP (Customer Information, Enterprise Asset Management, Finance, and Supply Chain). The S.T.A.R.T program represents a best practice for companies in the utility industry and will provide improved end to end business operations, reduced overall costs, and allow continued business and operational growth. To facilitate this system update, Cleco worked with several digital and IT partners to install the technology and integrate it into the company. The system was developed by SAP, and IBM provided system integration services. This session will highlight the journey and why Cleco chose enterprise SAP and IBM to assist them.

Toronto Hydro Goes Mobile: Modernizing Our Field Workforce

In October 2018, Toronto Hydro went live with a new ERP system, Enterprise Connect, an SAP-based suite of applications that replaced a 16-year old legacy system and 31 custom applications to more effectively serve its 768,000 electric customers. This included various modules including finance, HR, SAP SuccessFactors, payroll, materials management, project and portfolio management, project systems, plant maintenance, and more. Within the “Engineering and Construction” and “Electric Operations, Procurement, and Customer Care” divisions, the multi-resource scheduling module and SAP Work Manager application were deployed to more than 400 internal Toronto Hydro staff and external contractors to move crewperson work result details from paper to mobile and allow equipment updates, maintenance inspection results, and time entry submissions electronically throughout the workday. In this session, Toronto Hydro and our partner, Evora IT Solutions, will describe the solution components, key business benefits, and lessons learned throughout the journey and will include a system demonstration of the SAP Work Manager 6.4 mobile application with its key enhancements.

In 2016, Snohomish County PUD implemented SAP Extended Enterprise Content Management by OpenText with integration on-premise to OpenText Content Server for multiple business processes in finance, supply chain, and EAM. All the unstructured documentation for these SAP index business processes were local in our OpenText environment. In June of 2019, we moved the entire OpenText solution, including the SAP Extended Enterprise Content Management integrations, from on-premise SAP to OpenText Managed Cloud Services. We will talk about processes and how we migrated to the cloud and why, and we will cover how our SAP integrated business processes are working.

Electric Vehicle Charging into the Future

California pushed boundaries to protect the environment when it set ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction goals for the year 2030. San Diego Gas & Electric embraced this challenge with the implementation of a large-scale utility-sponsored electric vehicle (EV) charging program, Power Your Drive, in Southern California. The investment in infrastructure empowered customers to embrace cleaner energy and encouraged greater adoption of EVs across the region. SDG&E had to create a solution that could accept and reconcile third-party data with its own in order to bill drivers participating in the program.

Learn how SDG&E built functionality for the custom program in SAP S/4HANA to manage a large amount of customer data, determine and distribute daily pricing, integrate with the third-party service providers, and enable near-standard billing processes.

The capabilities unleased by SAP S/4HANA are allowing SDG&E to bill customers directly, making it easy for customer EV charging while continuing to invest in clean transportation programs, support the statewide goal to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, promote a clean economy, lower pollution, and make California a cleaner place.

What Happens After the Consultants Leave: SAP Post-Project Support

The project has ended. The contractors are gone. Users are trained. The system is stable. Now what? A lot of money was spent on the project, and finance wants to know what the business benefits are of the technology just implemented.

At Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), the Mariner Initiative deployed several key projects between 2013 and 2016. This presentation will tell the story of what happens when the movie ends and how SAP lives on in our daily lives. We will illustrate how we got users engaged and enthusiastic about moving away from the Stone Age and steps closer to the Jetsons Era. Salt River Project Readies FERC Accounting for SAP S/4HANA Financials

At Salt River Project (SRP), regulatory reporting was difficult to understand, tie back to participation billing, support pricing, and audit request. To increase readiness for SAP S/4HANA and to address these issues, SRP optimized its SAP ECC system running on HANA with a “CO-centric” model of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) reporting through an efficient, five-month project. The optimization also ensures that current financials are consistent with how they will look in the Universal Journal. Come to this session to hear how this seemingly simple change will enable SRP to establish much greater financial data consistency years before moving to SAP S/4HANA.

Real-Time Regulatory Reporting and Analysis Through SAP S/4HANA and Utegration Finance4U

UGI Utilities Inc. (UGI) is undertaking digital transformation through SAP S/4HANA platform. Like many regulated utilities, one of the challenges is the statutory requirement to report financial results to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) based on the FERC Uniform System of Accounts. In classic ERP implementations, utilities were struggling with dual postings into different ledgers and reconciliation of the two ledgers. The translation from GAAP postings to FERC postings introduced further reporting challenges, which are often time-consuming and manually intensive. UGI saw great opportunity to solve the classic problem with a more innovative approach through SAP S/4HANA with its universal journal ledger and real-time nature. Utegration’s Finance4U product—as an add-on directly on top of SAP S/4HANA—consolidated Utegration’s many years of experience. Along with best practices on FERC reporting and SAP S/4HANA, UGI accomplished this vision. In this session, UGI and Utegration will share their experience on merging the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) ledger and regulatory ledger in SAP S/4HANA implementation with Utegration Finance4U, seamlessly translating GAAP accounts to FERC accounts in real time.

Implementing SAP Fieldglass SOW and Ariba - Perspectives from a First Mover

This session will explore the process we went through to implement SAP Ariba with SAP's Fieldglass SOW module as a bolt on solution. Products implemented included SAP Ariba Buying and Invoicing, SAP Store Loyalty Program, SAP Sourcing, SAP Contract Management, and SAP Fieldglass SOW modules. Additionally, we went through a refresh of Concur platform.

NiSource was an early adapter for putting in a very heavy suite of SAP products while working through the integration points, product design differences between systems, and lack of cohesiveness in the SAP product (as evidenced by the change in delivery model). Despite the challenges, by October 2019 we will have successfully implemented the primary modules.

We will share our design conclusions, including the importance of common design for all modules, picking an experienced SI, and how to come to the table prepped for the SAP implementation teams. Additionally, we will talk to the product enhancements made by SAP Fieldglass due to the business needs that will allow SAP Fieldglass to better support future and current customers.

CIS Implementation in 18 Months with Better Customer Performance

DC Water serves a high volume of government agencies along with residential, commercial, and industrial customers. The organization sought to improve customer experience with increased self-service capabilities. DC Water recognized the need to enhance its system capabilities while also developing in-house expertise in the meter-to-cash cycle. DC Water successfully deployed the system in record time, on time, and on budget, inclusive of installing a Tier-1 customer information system (CIS), a new customer web and mobile portal, a new bill payment and presentment solution, and a new mobile field work management and dispatching system. Using a hybrid traditional and Agile implementation methodology, this project sets a new industry benchmark for implementations of this type. In addition to an accelerated implementation, which ensures a rapid payback, DC Water also avoided the significant operational impacts on its call center and back offices by employing a comprehensive change management program and extensive training program that allowed users to practice on the new system side by side with the system it was replacing. The new system has exceeded expectations across all fronts.

National Grid Plans Out Its Road Map to SAP S/4HANA Finance

National Grid’s current SAP ECC environment is highly modified with inefficient code-block design that makes FERC reporting, month-end close, operational integration, and regular system upgrades very complex and expensive. Through a 12-week SAP S/4HANA road map program, National Grid was able to lay out a risk-minimized and efficient way to reimplement SAP as SAP S/4HANA.

The journey included:

  • Determine the future process inventory in structured workshops over the course of 12 weeks.

  • During the workshops we also map the future process inventory to software solutions to limit and rationalize customizations.

  • Evaluate on-site versus cloud hosting options.

  • Evaluate rate case and overall regulatory strategy.

  • Sequence the scope (processes and systems) into two to three deployment scenarios.

  • Estimate project and operational cost for the deployment scenarios and potential automation benefits.


The SAP S/4HANA road map developed three implementation options together with the associated overall cost for them, which is input to NG’s business case for the SAP S/4HANA deployment in tandem. NG will be designing the next-generation code block as part of a SAP S/4HANA phase 0.

Duke’s Journey Towards Data-Driven Customer Insights

Duke Energy transformed the customer experience and consolidated data from 30-plus applications into a single SAP HANA Express Edition (EE) Data Hub. These efforts provide a 360-degree view of customer interactions, helps agents predict customer intent and customer needs, and builds a data foundation for advanced predictive analytics, machine learning, and applied intelligence. Innovative solutions to be discussed include: customer intent prediction, collaborative assessment recommendation engine (CARE), predictive analytics, and leveraging the latest SAP HANA technology to build a data hub in HANA EE and Predictive Analysis Library (PAL). There was collaboration between Accenture, Duke Business/IT, and SAP to define business use cases, set up SAP HANA EE Data Hub, and implement predictive algorithms using PAL. The first step was to design SAP HANA EE Data Hub to bring data from various internal and external data sources. The second step was to design the consumption layer using PAL predictive algorithms to develop business solutions around customer intent prediction, offer recommendation, and marketing campaigns.

MRP: Inventory Management and Work Management Integration

The business expectations to maintain the right inventory mix to support projects has grown exponentially in the utility industry. As Southern California Edison (SCE) continued its technology journey to SAP S/4HANA®, the business knew it needed to refresh strategies within Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) wheel, especially when it came to materials master data governance and data quality. The organization began to start using SAP to effectively manage all materials master data, MRP settings, procurement, vendors, transmission and distribution (T&D) field needs, and any other discipline that was required. SCE has made minor business and technology custom enhancements to support better inventory management techniques.

In this presentation, SCE will take you on its journey for an environment where data management is used as a strength and a competitive advantage. This is accomplished by integrating with work management to save inventory carrying costs with elevated focus on inventory and vendor management. Asset Lifecycle Analytics and Enhanced Data Integration Platform for MUG

The need to use asset lifecycle analytics and an enhanced data integration platform to shape and formulate asset management strategy has become more widespread since data capacity is no longer a constraint.

This presentation showcases the use of SAP technologies such as SAP HANA®, big data integration with automated meter information, and data integration using SAP Data Services to provide “asset health scoring” algorithms. The application of the technical capabilities has provided next-generation building blocks within CenterPoint Energy’s analytics foundation. We discuss how this helped us to pull data from several sources for correlation and with insight into the information from HANA.

The asset health score is used to determine the condition of major underground (MUG) transformers and indicates whether it requires any intervention (maintenance or replacement). The “asset health scoring” algorithm was developed for CenterPoint Energy 35 kV and 12 kV MUG Distribution Transformers but is sufficiently generic to be applied in any MUG distribution system.

Integrated Utility Leveraging SAP S/4HANA Digital Core

Indianapolis Power & Light (IPL) and Dayton Power & Light (DPL) embarked on a digital transformation journey to SAP S/4HANA, replacing their legacy Oracle ERP among other applications and went live on April 1, 2019. This program included replacing the legacy ERP with a new SAP S/4HANA implementation, implementing PowerPlan (PP), and enabling the PP-HANA connector. Also enabled was the cloud-to-cloud and cloud-to-on-premise integration (as the SAP S/4HANA system is hosted by SAP S/4HANA Cloud). The companies also enabled mobile workforce with SAP Work Manager and implemented an analytics solution using the hub for data management. Hawaiian Electric has a lot of data stored in disparate systems across multiple business units within the company. This makes it difficult and time-consuming to utilize data to support business and operational needs, particularly when it impacts grid operations.

The state of Hawaii has committed to the ambitious goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045. To support the state’s goal, Hawaiian Electric is turning to the use of technologies and, more importantly, the data received from those technologies to help transform how the company operates the rapidly evolving grid.

In this presentation, Hawaiian Electric will discuss its recent partnership with SAP to conduct a proof of concept, utilizing the SAP HANA application as the platform to integrate data from multiple sources to support an operations-focused use case.

The use case involves two anticipated deliveries from SAP:

  1. A geographic information system (GIS) visualization of the daily load distribution, in near real time, over the service territory of Oahu with overlays of the weather and satellite images, location of various customers, and an estimation of the distributed generation resources

  2. A system-level forecast of the anticipated load presented at hourly intervals for the next rolling 24 hours ahead


This presentation will highlight Hawaiian Electric’s experience with the SAP HANA application and the two use case deliverables, including any lessons learned or benefits realized.

Data Management in the Cloud - an Introduction to SAP HANA Cloud Services

In order to make accurate business decisions, utilities need real-time, integrated data from various data sources, including legacy data, social media, sensor data, and web logs. The gap between business expectations and the challenges of data management across enterprises has become the primary motivation to innovate with an SAP HANA Cloud Services architecture, which is a gateway to all data and related computation across a utility. The goal of SAP HANA Cloud Services is to increase agility and minimize complexity by providing easy and governed access to data, reducing the number of data copies and data movement requirements to enable new data-driven use cases that leverage disparate data sources and advanced analytics. In this session, we will reintroduce SAP HANA Cloud Services and SAP Data Warehouse Cloud (both announced at SAPPHIRE NOW and ASUG Annual Conference 2019) and provide an overview and demonstration of the components available today as well as the road map for upcoming innovations.
